FIBROID EMBOLIZATION IN THE UTERUS

FIBROID EMBOLIZATION IN THE UTERUS

Embolizations Albuquerque:

Many women who suffer from uterine fibroids undergo surgery as the primary treatment option; however, many of these women are not candidates for surgery due to their health status, age, or simply their unwillingness to have invasive surgery to treat uterine fibroids. A new nonsurgical treatment option has been developed called uterine artery embolization (UAE) or uterine leiomyoma embolization (ULE). This procedure involves injecting a substance into the arteries that feed blood to the uterus, which then clogs up the arteries and stops blood flow to the fibroid tumors – therefore reducing the size of the tumors.

About our practice

In Albuquerque, New Mexico, at Embolizations of Albuquerque, Dr. Mahmoudi has been performing uterine artery embolizations for over 15 years. He is a pioneer in the treatment of uterine fibroids with this nonsurgical technique.

What is an embolization?

Uterine artery embolization is a percutaneous, nonsurgical treatment for uterine leiomyomas (fibroids). Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that may lead to a condition called abnormal uterine bleeding — causing heavy menstrual cycles. By injecting the fibroid with an agent that blocks the blood supply, it can shrink and eventually die. This procedure can also be used to treat uterine fibroid tumors.

What procedures can be done during this procedure?

Endometrial ablation is also known as uterine fibroid embolization. It’s a procedure that can be done to treat abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) from uterine fibroids. This can include heavy menstrual cycles or periods that last for more than seven days. Many women with fibroid tumors have difficulty managing their lives because of these conditions. Embolizations Albuquerque offers treatment for uterine fibroid embolizations, meaning you’ll be able to manage your symptoms and experience more freedom during your daily activities.

Is uterine fibroid embolization right for me?

Uterine fibroid embolization is an outpatient procedure that does not require general anesthesia. Patients go home the same day and are encouraged to resume normal activities within a few days. The treatment is also low-risk and complication-free, as well as reversible with no known side effects. Your doctor can advise you on whether uterine fibroid embolization is right for you.

Uterine Artery Embolization is a percutaneous, nonsurgical treatment for uterine leiomyomas (fibroids). Fibroids are non-cancerous tumors that may lead to a condition called abnormal uterine bleeding — causing heavy menstrual cycles. Uterine fibroid embolization is performed by inserting an interventional radiologist’s catheter and blocking the blood flow to the fibroid by compressing the artery to shrink and/or eliminate it. The procedure is typically done as an outpatient procedure with mild sedation and takes less than 2 hours. There are some risks involved with this procedure, such as bladder injury and temporary vaginal discharge.
