All about Amanda Gorman
Amanda Gorman is a writer and extremist from the United States. She reached people all over the world when she read her poem “The Hill We Climb” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
Activist:
Gorman is also an activist who fights for issues like the environment, equality, and education. She has wanted to run for president since she was 11. She plans to run in 2036, which is the first time she will be old enough to win. Gorman says the following mantra before he performs: “I’m the daughter of Black writers whose ancestors were slaves who fought for their freedom and changed the world. People call me.”
Early Years:
Joan Wicks gave birth to Amanda Gorman on March 7, 1998, in Los Angeles, California. She was born early, along with her twin sister Gabrielle.
Auditory Processing Disorder:
Gorman had trouble speaking as a child and was told he had an auditory processing disorder when he was in kindergarten. This meant that until she was about 20, she had trouble saying the letter “r.” In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Gorman said, “Both my twin and I were born early, which can cause babies to have trouble learning at first.”
Therapy Session:
Gorman went to therapy for his speech. She also learned how to say “r” sounds with the help of the Hamilton soundtrack. “I would listen to the track of “Aaron Burr, Sir” and try to do it over and over again,” she said:
Her situation was hard, but it also had some good points. Gorman told Winfrey the following: “When you have to teach yourself how to say words from scratch, I think it makes you a stronger writer. Poetry is a great step to learn English because it helps you understand sound, pitch, and pronunciation. Because of this, I don’t think of my speech problem as a weakness or a disability, but as one of my greatest strengths.”
School Life:
Gorman developed in West Los Angeles and went to a private school in Santa Monica called New Roads. As her mother taught English to middle school students in Watts, Gorman saw how different people had different chances to learn.

UN Youth Delegate:
Gorman was a UN youth delegate when she was 16 years old. She went to Harvard University, where she studied sociology as her main subject. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Gorman didn’t get his cum laude until 2020.
Poetry and Writing:
When Gorman was 5, she would wake her mother up early in the morning to ask for paper to write on. When she was in the 3rd class, she heard Ray Bradbury’s poem “Dandelion Wine.” This was one of the first things that made her like poetry. But in 2021, Gorman said, “I started writing poetry before I started reading it, mostly because poetry wasn’t taught well in my classrooms at the time.”
African American Poetry:
Gorman loved the poems by Sonia Sanchez that she read in middle school. Gorman felt even more connected to poetry after reading Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of African American Poetry. She got more into writing with the help of mentors from the non-profit group WriteGirl. She did shows for WriteGirl, The Moth, and Urban Word after that.
Won Title:
Gorman was given this title when he was 16 years old. In 2017, she was the first person to be named National Youth Poet Laureate. Her organization, One Pen One Page, was started to encourage young people to read and write and to be creative.
National Youth Poet Laureate:
In 2017, Amanda Gorman became the United States’ first National Youth Poet Laureate. In 2021, she was the youngest poet to write and read her work at a presidential inauguration. The 22-year-song old’s “The Hill We Climb,” which was played at Biden’s inauguration, made people feel both sad about the past and hopeful about what’s to come. Gorman additionally read a sonnet at the Super Bowl in 2021, co-facilitated the Met Gala in 2021, and was named an Estée Lauder Global Change maker.
Work Publish in Book:

Another thing that Gorman likes to do is write novels. “My first love was writing books, and I still want to do it. I just usually can finish one poem faster than I can finish a whole book of stories.” The first poem was called “The Hill We Clim.”
Biden Inaugural Committee:
Dr. Jill Biden had seen Gorman perform and asked him to write a poem for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris’s inauguration. The Biden Inaugural Committee asked Gorman to sing at the inauguration at the end of December 2020.
Inspiration:
Gorman read speeches by Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and Martin Luther King Jr. to help him get ready for this. She also looked at the work of Maya Angelou, who has been an inspiration to her for a long time, and Elizabeth Alexander.
Uprising at the Capitol:
After the uprising at the Capitol on January 6, Gorman added lines to her poem. She said this to the Los Angeles Times: “I wrote an opening poem that talks about these scars and wounds. We hope it will move us toward helping them get better.”
Honor of Angelou:
On January 20, 2021, Gorman wore her signature yellow coat with a red Prada headband on top. She also wore a ring of a caged bird that Winfrey had given her in honor of Angelou. Gorman then sang “The Hill We Climb” to the crowd at the inauguration and to people watching from other places.
Career:
Gorman had read her poems at the Obama White House, the Library of Congress, and Lincoln Center before the year 2021. But Gorman became even more famous after her amazing performance at the Biden-Harris inauguration.
International Rescue Committee:
Gorman’s poem “A New Day’s Lyric” was put on Instagram’s official account at the end of 2021 to welcome the new year of 2022. Gorman thought that the project would help raise money for the International Rescue Committee. Instagram gave $50,000 to the cause.
President:
Gorman read a poem called “Chorus of the Captains” at the Super Bowl in 2021. This was after he had become president. Before her performance at the inauguration, Gorman was already planning to make that appearance, but since then, she has had a lot of other offers. She told Vogue, “I have to be careful to take jobs that make me feel something.” She is lucky to have mentors like Winfrey, who has given her advice since they met on John Krasinski’s YouTube show Some Good News in May 2020.
